Laurie and Whittle
A Perspective View of the City of Naples
15 x 10 inches
Copper plate engraving with vibrant original hand colour; published in London in 1794.
This is one of a series of decorative views of Italian cities that were produced back in Lonon as mementos of The Grand Tour. This famous view of the city from the Bay of Naples would have been familiar to many of those who travelled to Italy in the late C18th in search of antiquity, classical enlightenment and other more raunchy entertainment. British shiops are anchored in the bay and the sights of Vesuvius and Pompeii can just about be glimpsed in the background.
