Damiers Vienna

Damiers.

A General View of the City of Vienna.

17 x 11.5 inches

A copper plate etching with original hand colour; engraved by Damiers for Laurie and Whittle and published in London in 1818.

Laurie and Whittle were one of London's most successful and prolific print, book and map publishers at the beginning of the Nineteenth Century. They commissioned a vast number of topographical engravings to meet the demand for images of towns and cities across Europe and the world. Many were copied directly from foreign engravings in what was a cut-throat business that existed beyond the protection of Hogarth's Copyright Act of 1734.

Vienna was one of the cities that attracted great interest for those who were fortunate enough to travel across Europe at the time. Its architecture, culture and, in particular its great musical tradition attracted visitors from far and wide.
