Fairland Gamekeeper

Thomas Fairland after William Barrand

The Keeper's Poney

16 x 14 inches

In this charming scene we join a gamekeeper as he leaves the stable yard and begin his day's work upon the estate. With gun at half-cock and spaniels eager for the chase we can assume this gamekeeper will return with a brace of pheasant at the very least.

Such prints as this would have decorated many an estate office or servants' hall. Thomas Fairland was one of the many engravers who emerged to meet this demand. He originally trained as a line engraver but found he was much more gifted at lithography, a method that was to grow in popularity as the C19th progressed.
