Currier and Ives (Thomas Worth)

A pair of humorous betting caricatures

1. The "Crowd" that Scooped the Pool
2. The "Sports" who lost their Tin

20 x 15.5 inches

Any regular racegoer will empathise with the emotions shown in these two prints. In the first image everybody in the scene is rejoicing at the horse's win. Owners, backers and grooms alike celebrate as they contemplate their winnings; hats are thrown in the air, hands are shaken and the horse is hugged. This jubilation contrasts with the second, more sombre, scene where the horse has clearly lost and the crowd are subdued in spirits as they return to the stables having lost their stake.
