Stephen Whatley is a contemporary, expressionist painter whose work has been much acclaimed. He was born in London in 1965 and studied at the Ipswich and Norwich Schools of Art. His accomplishments are many but, to highlight just a few:
1. The Tower of London commissioned him to produce a series of paintings to decorate the underpass at Tower Hill at the turn of the millennium .
2. For the summer opening of Buckingham Palace, London Underground commissioned two posters that were used throughout the network
3. Amongst his illustrious sitters, he numbers Dame Judi Dench, Julie Walters and Alison Steadman
4. His work hangs in numerous private and public collections including The Historic Royal Palaces, the BBC, Westminster Cathedral and Taylor Woodrow.
Stephen's paintings are quite extraordinary; his courageous and vibrant use of colour has earned him many followers. He works on site with a spontaneity and flourish that make his paintings a joy to behold. American Tussle is one from a collection of paintings entitled The Iconic Male. Stephen was inspired in this work by the Hollywood models of the 1940s and 50s and a celebration of the male physique. These canvases have been in the artist's private collection and are only now being released for sale.
