Valentine Green.

14¾ x 18½ inches

If you are an artist how do you cope with the temptation to tweak your appearance in self-portraiture for a more flattering outcome? Look closely at this austere image of the engraver Valentine Green and you will see the words "Seipsum Sculpsit" meaning 'engraved by himself''. Green has clearly avoided such temptation for here we have a very realistic and unflattering image of a man whose extraordinary abilities upon the copper plate would see him appointed Associate Engraver at the newly formed Royal Academy in 1775 and lead to his appointment as Mezzotint Engraver to His Majesty King George III. His opus numbers in excess of 400 prints, mostly portraits in mezzotint, and it is only fitting that his own image should sit amongst them.
