Giovanni Battista Piranesi (after)
Interno della Basilica di S. Pietro in Vaticano
22.5 x 17 inches
A large-scale etching after the work of Piranesi; published in Rome circa 1820.
This magnificent interior view of Saint Peter's Basilica was issued as part of a series of views of Rome after artists such as Piranesi, Morelli and Pronti. The collection was entitled "Della Citta di Roma" and would have been targeted towards those travelling to Rome on The Grand Tour at the beginning of the C19th. The architectural scale of St. Peter's remains impressive today but it would have been staggering for those seeing it for the first time in the 1820s.
