Smart Pollard Epsom Races

Smart & Hunt after James Pollard.

Epsom Races Here They Come
To the Noblemen and Gentlemen of the Turf, and the Subscribers, this Print representing the Horses passing Tattenham Corner for the Derby Stakes is most respectfully dedicated by their obedient and much obliged Servants, S & J Fuller

24 x 16½ inches

A large-scale etching with aquatint and original hand colour, engraved by Smart and Reeve after Pollard and published in London in 1834.

The Derby Stakes were originally held on a Thursday in late May or early June and in 1834 the race was won by the cumbersomely named 'Plenipotentiary' on the 29th May so this print, dated the 2nd June, most probably depicts this particular race. The excitement is palpable as the horses charge around Tattenham Corner on the final straight to the finishing line. The Grandstand is within sight and stewards can be seen having to control the excitable crowds, forcibly in one case where a spectator has strayed into the middle of the course!
