Charles Whitworth (1752-1825) was a dashing diplomat and politician who held key posts under George III as the British Envoy to Poland and subsequently St. Petersburg. He made an advantageous marriage to the 32 year old widow of his old friend, The Duke of Dorset, who brought with her a zest for power and pleasure as well as Dorset House in London, Knole Park in Kent and a tidy income of £13,000 a year (nearly 3 million in today's terms!)
