G. Hawkins after J. Syer

Bath, from Beacon Hill [&] Bath from Beechencliff

17 x 12 inches

A pair of tinted lithographs by G. Hawkins after Syer and published in Bath circa 1850.

These beautiful lithographs of Bath, gently tinted in sepia, are taken from two different vantage points above the city, Beacon Hill near Lansdown to the north and Beechencliff in the south.

They both depict the imposing Bath Abbey as central to the panorama and both show different sections of the River Avon that winds its way through the city. By the middle of the C19th Bath was well established as a fashionable spa town and much of the Georgian architecture of the Georgian and Regency periods is evident in these views. The softness of the lithography gives these images a lovely serenity as if taken on a hazy summer's afternoon.
