Henry Papprill after W.Pringle. This plate representing The Review of the Queen's Own Regiment of Yeomanry Cavalry, on Kempsey-Ham. 24 x 18 inches An aquatint in original hand colour, engraved by Papprill after Pringle and published in London in 1839. Military Reviews were very important and popular occasions in the C19th and this one at Kempsey-Ham early in Queen Victoria's reign, shows the full extent of the pageantry involved. Kempsey is a village in Worcestershire and the Ham is this large flat space that we can see, alongside the river, perfect for a large-scale military review. The Worcestershire Yeomanry Cavalry can be seen riding in formation across the Ham whilst canons are fired in the middle of the scene. The River Severn is not visible but is indicated by the sail of a ship over towards the far left of the print. Away from the military action the panorama is enlivened by a fascinating proscenium showing all the elegantly attired visitors picnicking and viewing the proceedings from atop their carriages. £850 |
