Thomas Rowlandson after George Moutard Woodward

Awkward Squads Studying The Graces

13 x 9.5 inches

A hand coloured etching by Rowlandson after Woodward, published in London in 1809.

Six pairs of characters are arranged in two rows with each couple comprising a sophisticated and svelte French instructor and his rather ungainly English pupil. The instructor performs each task with consummate ease whilst the unfortunate tutees complain about aches, pains and general incompetence! In one vignette a buxom lady complains ''Sir, if I go lower, I shall never be able to get up again'', whilst in another the unfortunate pupil has ended up on the floor, unable to ''stand half an hour like a goose on one leg''.
