Sala Fox Hounds

F. Sala and Co.

Three to one

29 x 24

A scarce lithograph in vibrant, original colour, published in F. Sala and Co. in Germany circa 1870.

There is much to like in this mischievous rustic scene where three hunting dogs are engaged in a face-off with a fox. It is hard to discern who has the upper hand, but one suspects that the fox has met its match. Images such as these would have adorned many a hunting lodge in C19th Bavaria and beyond. The palette is particularly pleasing, and the composition has been well thought through. The encounter between dogs and fox takes place in a circular motion around the magnificent, gnarled trunk of an oak tree. Expressions are playful rather than hostile, so it is to be hoped the fox makes a speedy retreat and lives to fight another day.
